Adjusting the Data to Prove the Hypothesis
The number of weather stations was already inadequate, but was reduced in the 1960s (top right graph (b) under the false assumption that satellites would provide all the data. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) quickly discovered that many things cannot be measured, such as whether precipitation occurred at all. The top diagram shows the number and length of operation of stations. The red line shows only 1000 weather stations with a record length of 100 years, with almost all in the eastern US or Western Europe.
A significant decline occurred in 1990 when they reduced the number of stations used to calculate monthly and annual global averages. It created an artificial increase in temperatures, as the bottom right graph illustrates. This happened because of fewer stations, but also because of those chosen. The stations are part of the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN).
